Notice The Influence

Research shows that repeated exposure to alcohol-related content can shape how we think about drinking, influencing when, why, and how often we drink.

These messages are so common that we often stop noticing them.

Learning to notice the influence helps us start conversations and limit the impact of these influences on our daily lives.

Start noticing the cues

Alcohol messaging isn’t just in advertising. It shows up in many places in daily life.

Try this:

For one day, notice how many times alcohol appears in your environment. The number may surprise you.

  • Social media
  • TV
  • Friends and family
  • transit ads
  • Restaurants
  • Clothing

Look for the message behind the moment

Alcohol-related content often creates a narrative that alcohol is a fundamental part of certain situations,

like hanging out with colleagues after work, or going to events or celebrations.

Over time, alcohol can start to feel like a natural or expected part of many activities,

such as a child's birthday party, a family barbecue,

or a casual meetup.

When you see alcohol in your day, ask yourself:

Why does alcohol feel like it belongs here?

How many alcohol ads or references have I seen today?

What feeling or lifestyle is alcohol being connected to?

Would this moment feel different without alcohol being part of it?

Was I thinking about having a drink before I saw that message?

Sometimes we are under the influence before the first sip.
